Institution: With a rich history that dates back to 1871, a beautiful campus, a diverse curriculum and top notch instructors, University of Central Missouri has been named by the Princeton Review as one of the nation’s top values in higher education. In spite of the accolades, the university has a unique recruiting challenge. 

Challenge: Already faced with overcoming a regional-sounding moniker, UCM has to deal with a “locationally challenged” name that creates confusion among prospective students. That’s because University of Central Missouri is actually located in western Missouri while the University of Missouri is in the center of the state. With a limited budget and personnel to compete for graduating high school seniors, UCM needed to eliminate confusion and cut through the clutter of recruiting letters and brochures.

Solution: Lexinet suggested using the misnomer as a unique asset by creating a self mailer that had some fun with the fact that UCM was not really central in the state. And what better way to put an exclamation point on it than “Dynamic Mapping”? This feature added a unique map to every mailer showing directions from the student’s home to the UCM campus!

Results: This simple, creative technique was intended as a fun attention getter and not expected to be a decision maker for a student. However, as UCM recruiters discovered in follow-up phone calls to high target groups, all they had to say was, “We’re the school that sent you that cool map from your house to the school,” and recall was virtually 100%!

The mailer had done its job of getting through and getting noticed, thanks to a unique map that was fun enough and memorable enough to be a great ice breaker. No UCM recruitment mailing since has gone out without Lexinet’s Dynamic Mapping.
